De Turkmenen zijn een zeer belangrijke stam, die voornamelijk in Afghanistan en de voormalige Sovjetrepubliek Turkmenistan woont. De Iraanse bevolking is beperkt tot een gebied rond Gonbad-e- Kavus (500.000 inwoners) in de provincie Mazandran. De Iraanse Turkmenen behoren tot drie stammen; de Yomut, de Tekke en de Atabat. De eerste twee zijn het meest bekend om hun tapijten. Het waren oorspronkelijk nomadische stammen, maar de meeste Iraanse Turkmenen zijn nu gevestigd, hoewel ze vaak een traditionele ronde tent hebben op een plein in de buurt van hun moderne bakstenen huizen. Turkmeense tapijten zijn traditioneel gemaakt van wol en hebben een beperkt scala aan kleuren; rood, zwart en ivoor, soms gemengd met andere kleuren en zijde. De typische patronen zijn geometrische bloemen (güls) en achthoekige patronen met variaties volgens stam. Volgens de traditie worden de tapijten in verschillende maten gemaakt, afhankelijk van waar in de tent ze moeten worden gebruikt; als deurgordijnen, zakdeksels, enz. Zeer grote tapijten worden soms op bestelling gemaakt voor stamhoofden.
